Personal Life: I am married to a wonderful Alpha female of Faith. My 32-year-old stepson was victim to my early parenting attempts, and I am currently a “late to the party” father, with a multi-sport teenage son, active in soccer and baseball. I have been active in leadership, coaching, and umpiring youth baseball for over 20 years.
32 years of professional experience have helped shape my patient care and relationships.
Doctoring is something I do, not who I am.
I look at my job as a combination of several persona’s wrapped into one.
I am here to escape Plato’s Cave. I am a translator of medical language/science. My job is to make the complex understandable, while questioning that which is simple yet made complex. Scientific knowledge shouldn’t hold a monopoly on its audience. 2024 and technology has made much available with a click and a swipe. The world is full of information, misinformation, that which is information made misinformation, and misinformation that has been made information. What I do know is summed up in the following taught to me by my Grandmother: “All that glitters is not gold” said the monkey as he pee’d in the moonlight. Therefore, the face value of information must be questioned. As should the reasons behind information, and the reasons for misinformation. It has been said that the Path to Hell is laid with bricks of good intentions. History tells us of many great academics, scholars, and physicians. It often does not tell us about the pioneers lost to the shadows, that were ahead of their time. Ignaz Semmelweis, MD was one such individual in 1846. A Hungarian physician that linked hand washing to infection control in delivering babies. He was ostracized for his passionate stance regarding such practice, to save mothers from septic post-partum deaths, yet he was committed to a mental institution for such strong beliefs. Today, professional ignorance is often referred to as Semmelweis Syndrome. When I teach medical students, I implore them not to use their White Coat as a weapon to intellectually beat the patient into compliance, especially if that intellect has been filtered through Semmelweis Syndrome lenses.
Above all, I believe each patient is a Sovereign being, due respect until proven otherwise. I also believe each sovereign being is a Soul, whose spirit is sparked from The Creator, way bigger than me. Yes, I am a Believer. I like to read and dialogue about historical translations of divinely inspired writings. My perspective is that all translations have come through human filters. These filters are our “veils of ignorance.” My journey for the truth translates into my practice, on a professional and personal level. My hope is that my search for the truth can lift the veils blocking good health, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I consider myself an Alpha by nature, a warrior by necessity. My hope is that my “Armor” and commitment are useful to my fellow Sojourners, for times are interesting. Ephesians 6:12
